Berlin Wall: Experience History Along the Mauerweg
Matthias Richter
The Berliner Mauerweg follows the former course of the Wall for roughly 160 kilometres. You can cycle the entire route or pick out the most rewarding sections.
Bernauer Straße
The memorial site on Bernauer Straße is the single most important place of remembrance for the division of Berlin. Original sections of the Wall still stand here, and the death strip has been preserved.
East Side Gallery
1.3 kilometres of painted Wall — the world's largest open-air gallery. The "Fraternal Kiss" is the most famous motif.
Bornholmer Straße
This is where the first border crossing opened on 9 November 1989. Not at the Brandenburger Tor — but on this unassuming street. A must-see for anyone staying in a Berlin apartment who wants to understand the city's Cold War history.
